new proton pump inhibitor, Nexium (esomeprazole)
AstraZeneca will be kicking their marketing machine into high gear for their new proton pump inhibitor, Nexium (esomeprazole)...before their patent on Prilosec (omeprazole) expires this year.
Nexium is the S-isomer of Prilosec. Prilosec is a mixture of S- and R-isomers.
Both isomers are active...but the S-isomer is metabolized more slowly, resulting in higher and more prolonged concentrations.
