Your patients may ask why they're being told to SWALLOW inhaled corticosteroids (Flovent HFA, etc) for eosinophilic esophagitis.

This chronic, inflammatory "asthma of the esophagus" can cause dysphagia, food impaction, vomiting, etc. It's on more people's radar now...and often occurs with asthma, allergies, etc.

Start with a PPI twice daily for 8 weeks in most cases. Consider GI referral if a patient has persistent symptoms or you suspect eosinophilic esophagitis...a biopsy is needed to diagnose this condition.
