Cerebyx (fosphenytoin injection)

Parke-Davis is now launching Cerebyx (fosphenytoin injection)...to use instead of intravenous Dilantin (phenytoin).

Fosphenytoin is a "prodrug"...it's rapidly converted to phenytoin after administration.

The advantage is that fosphenytoin is water soluble and therefore, better tolerated. This means fewer infusion reactions (pain, burning, and tissue damage)...faster infusion rate...and more reliable absorption when given IM.
