adding quinine to the list of drugs that shouldn't be used with the antihistamine Hismanal (astemizole)

Janssen is adding quinine to the list of drugs that shouldn't be used with the antihistamine Hismanal (astemizole).

It'll be included in their "black box warning" in the package insert...along with ketoconazole, itraconazole, and erythromycin.

Quinine can increase levels of astemizole...possibly by inhibiting the metabolism of astemizole. This is serious...high levels of astemizole can prolong the QT interval and cause fatal arrhythmias.
