Watch for Dexcom G7, a New CGM for Diabetes

Dexcom G7 will compete with FreeStyle Libre 3 and other continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems.

Both Dexcom G7 and FreeStyle Libre 3 automatically send blood sugar results to a compatible smartphone.

G7 can also send results to a smartwatch or a separate handheld receiver...Libre 3 will offer an optional receiver later this year.

Watch for mix-ups when dispensing CGMs.

For example, Dexcom G6 sensors will still be available and have white and green packaging like G7...but they aren’t interchangeable.

Enter the correct quantity and days’ supply. With G7, one box contains ONE 10-day 3 boxes should last 30 days.

But with G6, 1 box has THREE sensors for a 30 days’ supply.

FreeStyle Libre 3 currently has TWO 14-day sensors/ last 28 days. But stay tuned for 15-day sensors later this year.

Expect CGM to be covered by most payers. But a prior auth may be needed...or it may be covered as durable medical equipment (DME).

The sensors for G6 or G7 cost about $350/month...or about $130/month for Libre 3.

Ask patients if they plan to send CGM results to their phone or watch. If needed, help check manufacturer websites for compatibility.

Also ensure that patients receive pharmacist counseling with learn about proper use.

For example, G7 sensors should NOT be placed on the abdomen...but G6 sensors can.

Listen for complaints about sensors not sticking to the skin.

G6 and G7 have a special “overpatch” to help with adhesion. Or patients may need an adhesive, such as Skin Tac or Tegaderm.
