Every 25 minutes, a baby is born who will develop neonatal abstinence syndrome...due to moms using opioids during pregnancy.

Withdrawal symptoms, such as a high-pitched cry, tremors, fever, poor eating, or diarrhea, often occur within 24 hours of birth.

But symptoms can occur later for moms who are taking longer-acting opioids. For example, it may take up to 7 days if the mom is using methadone or buprenorphine.
