The flu vaccine does not contain aluminum, but does contain a form of mercury called thimerosal, which is also used in eye drops and contact lens solution.
Because of an increasing awareness of the theoretical potential for neurotoxicity of even low levels of mercury, concerns about the use of thimerosal in vaccines and other products have been raised. Claims have been made that thimerosal in influenza vaccines increases the risk for Alzheimer's disease.
Thimerosal, which is approximately 50% mercury by weight, is metabolized to ethyl mercury. Ethyl mercury is different from methyl mercury.
