Chantix (varenicline) treats alcohol abuse.

This may be true...but it’s too early to use it specifically for alcohol abuse.

Smokers treated with varenicline seem to consume less alcohol. And some preliminary evidence suggests heavy smokers who use Chantix 2 mg/day for 4 weeks have fewer heavy drinking days.

Varenicline seems to reduce both nicotine- and alcohol-induced dopamine release...decreasing the rewarding effects. Plus nicotine may increase alcohol cravings, so antagonizing nicotine may lessen the desire for alcohol.
