Effexor XR is a CAPSULE and the new one is a TABLET. The new tablets ARE bioequivalent to Effexor XR capsules...and cost about 20% less.

But they can't be automatically substituted in many states because they aren't rated as equivalent by the FDA. The tablets were approved as a new drug...not as a generic for Effexor XR.
