Darvocet and Darvon will be taken off the market.

The consumer group, Public Citizen, is pushing for propoxyphene-containing products (Darvocet, Darvon, etc) to be taken off the market. They say that the benefits of propoxyphene aren't worth the risks. It's linked to over ten thousand deaths...with over a third of them being accidental overdoses.

The UK's Committee on Safety of Medicines already yanked their propoxyphene products from the market last year due to the same concerns.

Several studies show that propoxyphene is no more effective than aspirin or acetaminophen in treating pain, yet it has narcotic side effects such as constipation and CNS depression. And a combination of acetaminophen plus propoxyphene (Darvocet) seems to be no better than acetaminophen on its own.
