Other salicylates can be used in place of aspirin for cardiovascular protection.

  Some patients are asking if a dose of Pepto-Bismol, or other drugs containing salicylates, will do in a pinch when aspirin's not on hand.

  The answer is NO. Aspirin's irreversible effect on platelet aggregation is caused by the acetyl moiety.

  NONacetylated salicylates (Trilisate, salsalate, diflunisal, Momentum, Doan's, etc) are reversible inhibitors...and are weaker prostaglandin inhibitors than aspirin. Their effects on platelets are short-lived and less robust.
